Mission Statement

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
CME Program

Purpose: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, through the CWRU CME Program, will support the life-long learning of physicians and other health professionals. The CME Program will help learners identify gaps in their professional practices related to recent research findings, the release of new clinical practice guidelines, and/or the identification of opportunities for improvement and by developing, delivering and assessing high quality post-graduate education activities that are designed to address these gaps. The result will be a program of CME activities that advances their confidence and competence, enhances their practice performance and where possible, improves clinical outcomes.

Content Areas: The development of content in the CWRU CME program is guided by data from needs assessment and focuses on addressing identified professional practice gaps.  All content is evidence-based where evidence exists.  Evidence is drawn from recent research studies that follow generally accepted scientific methods, clinical practice guidelines of professional societies in health care or government agencies, consensus statements of professional societies in healthcare, and locally accepted best practice.  Because University Hospitals Case Medical Center and CWRU function as an academic medical center, content from all specialties and subspecialties in medicine may be included in CWRU CME activities.  Professional practice gaps may be identified in all areas where physicians may have professional responsibilities including clinical medicine, research, administration, and teaching. One or more of the ACGME/ABMS core competencies will be reflected in the content of all CWRU CME activities. Faculty development is an important focus in the CWRU CME program.

Target Audience: All faculty members of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, including its primary affiliate University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and its other affiliate teaching hospitals, institutional partners and alumni, are the CME Program's primary audience. Physicians and other health professionals who practice in Cleveland and the surrounding communities comprise our secondary audience. Our tertiary audience includes physicians and other health care professionals from other states and countries.

Educational Activities and Services Provided: Activities sponsored will include regularly scheduled series (such as grand rounds and patient care conferences and mortality conferences), live conferences, enduring materials (such as monographs and other electronic formats), and web-based activities. The CME Program will also provide administrative and logistical services in support of faculty professional development and institutional healthcare improvement initiatives. CME activities will be designed to address identified gaps in professional practice and will follow approaches described in CME research as leading to improved physician confidence and competence, enhanced practice performance and where possible, improved clinical outcomes.

Expected Results: Case Western Reserve University is committed to providing a CME program in which participants can expect improvements in: 1) their perceptions about their personal efficacy in clinical practice; 2) their clinical and procedural skills; 3) clinical outcomes of their patients in areas that can be evaluated; and, 4) their professional development and life-long learning efforts. To accomplish this, the CME program will work more closely with the patient safety and performance improvement efforts of the clinical enterprise to determine how the involvement of CME can help the clinical enterprise achieve its goals related to improved clinical outcomes.
