CLEAR the AIR

SEARCH CaseMED:

On November 17, 2005, the health sciences schools Cleared the Air by becoming completely smoke-free.

A message from the deans of the health sciences schools of Case Western Reserve University:

We at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, and Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing are proud to be at the forefront of health-related research and education.

Continuing in this national leadership role, the health sciences schools of Case have become completely smoke-free. We joined our neighbor, University Hospitals of Cleveland, in launching the Clear the Air initiative effective November 17, 2005. On that date and thereafter, all walkways and grounds of the medical, dental and nursing schools – including the health sciences podium, the health sciences garage and other spaces – became entirely smoke-free. Such outdoor spaces at University Hospitals became smoke-free as well. Interior spaces of these institutions already were smoke-free.

We believe the smoke-free initiative will improve the learning and working environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors, and it will serve as a significant example to other institutions and organizations as well.

Sincerely,
Ralph I. Horwitz, M.D.
Dean, School of Medicine
