The Cardiac Exam: Auscultation

Functional (innocent) Murmur

A normal finding in many individuals is a functional murmur.  These murmur are also sometimes called normal, physiological, or flow murmurs.  These murmurs are innocent murmurs, meaning that they are benign and are not associated with any pathological conditions.  The sounds associated with these murmurs are caused by the normal flow of blood through normal valves.  The sounds heard are associated with turbulent flow.  Listen carefully to the functional murmur to be sure you can distinguish this benign sound from other pathological murmurs.
