Norton Greenberger, M.D. '59 Receives Friedenwald Medal

Dr. Greenberger Receives Highest Honor from AGA
Member of Case Western Reserve University Medical Alumni Association Board

Norton Greenberger MD '59Bethesda, Maryland (May 1, 2006) – The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) named Norton Greenberger, MD, the recipient of its 2006 Julius Friedenwald Medal for Distinguished Service for his lifelong contributions to the field of gastroenterology. This award is the highest honor the AGA bestows upon a member and was established in 1941 to recognize an individual for a career of exemplary service to the field of gastroenterology and the AGA. The award was presented to Dr. Greenberger during the AGA plenary session on May 22, 2006, at Digestive Disease Week® (DDW®), the largest international conference devoted to the science and practice of gastroenterology in Los Angeles.

Dr. Greenberger is currently a clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, who has a range of research interests including alcoholic liver disease, intestinal absorption of iron, inflammatory bowel disease and acute and chronic pancreatitis. After receiving his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Yale University, New Haven, CT, and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1959. Dr. Greenberger was an intern and then a medical resident at the University Hospital of Cleveland. He continued his training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was a clinical and research fellow. He also completed a fellowship with the U.S. Public Health Service, receiving a research project grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Greenberger joined Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1965, moving up through the ranks to professor in 1971. In 1972, he was named a professor and chairman of the department of medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, KS, a post he held until 2001. While at KU, he was president of KU Physicians Inc. for three years. After serving as the senior associate dean for academic affairs at the KU School of Medicine, Dr. Greenberger joined Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2002.

In addition to Dr. Greenberger’s AGA presidency, he served in the same capacity for the American College of Physicians, Association of Professors of Medicine, American Federation for Clinical Research (Midwestern section), and Central Society for Clinical Research.

During his nearly 30 years of teaching at KU, Dr. Greenberger taught more than 3,000 medical students and 800 residents. He has been honored for such service with a number of awards for outstanding teaching, including the Distinguished Educator Award from the AGA. He also has been recognized as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by Case Western Reserve Medical School and Honorary Alumnus of the Year by the KU School of Medicine, and has received honorary fellowships in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ireland, and College of Physicians of South Africa.

Dr. Greenberger is the author or co-author of more than 220 articles, books and book chapters. Most notably he authored Gastrointestinal Disorders: A Pathophysiologic Approach, served as the gastroenterology section editor for the Year Book of Medicine, and was the founder and an editor of the Year Book of Digestive Diseases. Dr. Greenberger has served on the editorial board of several medical journals, and he has been editor of four journals.

Jointly sponsored by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, DDW takes place May 20-25, 2006, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
