UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University is pleased to announce the 2009 summer program in Biomedical Engineering research for undergraduates,
funded by the National Science Foundation. Recent years have seen dramatic growth in the development and application of biomedical engineering in medicine and health care. Exciting examples include the development of non-invasive tissue imaging, such as MRI, neural engineering and prosthetics, new biomaterials and tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, and implantable sensors, while the impact of new nanotechnologies is only just beginning.

The 10-week summer REU program has 3 components: 1) Research Project, 2) Seminar Series, and 3) Social Activities. The three components will provide numerous opportunities for interaction and collaboration between the undergraduate student researchers and their mentors, graduate students, and with BME research staff. Much of the students' time will be spent on the research, immersed in the projects and research group activities. Research areas include biomaterials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, imaging, and neural engineering. Students will also participate in a seminar series consisting of a variety of topics, student presentations about their research, and guest speakers discussing career opportunities. REU students will be introduced to many of the social and cultural activities in the Cleveland area. Faculty research mentors have strong a track record of publications with undergraduate researchers, and are dedicated to offering an intellectually stimulating REU program.

Program Highlights:
• 10-week summer research experience from May 26 to July 31, 2009
• Stipend of $4,900 and university housing accomodations for non-local participants

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN THE DEPARTMENT OF

PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOPHYSICS

The Department of Physiology and Biophysics Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is an important component of the departmental educational effort. This program is designed to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to obtain first-hand research experience in a state-of-the-art research environment. The immediate goal is to provide students with a rewarding and confidence-building experience. The ultimate goal is to foster new careers in biomedical research. Candidates who are interested in this program must have a genuine interest in exploring career options in biomedical research.

The program accepts undergraduates from universities nationwide. Approximately 60% of our SURP students are from Ohio universities and the remaining students matriculate from across the country. The program is available for sophomores, juniors and seniors and an option exists for a second year of participation based on interest and performance. The program accepts a maximum of fifteen students per summer and only one student per laboratory.

The program lasts for eight weeks during the summer, although interested students are encouraged and welcomed to prolong their stay. Students are paid a stipend of $2,500 dollars (one half from the department and one half from the sponsoring laboratory) for the eight week program and, in many cases, housing support is also available. In addition, students who are planning to participate for a second year may desire to write a research proposal for a national research service award (American Heart Association, American Cancer Association, National Institutes of Health, etc.). Applications for these prestigious awards are written in conjunction with a Department of Physiology and Biophysics faculty mentor during the semester prior to the second summer. The student need not be in the department while preparing these applications. These awards provide $2,500 per summer in stipend support. In recognition of the initiative required to obtain these grants, the department will award a student who obtains a national research service award an additional $1,000 to be contributed by the department so that the net support is $3,500.

During the first several days of the program, the mentor and the student identify an appropriate research project and write a single page proposal describing the planned research. This proposal is signed by the student and the sponsoring faculty mentor and is then submitted for approval to the SURP Program Director, Dr. Andrea Romani. This document becomes the blueprint for the summers work. It describes the scientific background underpinning the proposal, describes the techniques to be used, and sets out goals to be accomplished during the summer.
At the beginning of the second week, the SURP students meet as a body to discuss and present their research plans to the other SURP students. Later in the week the students meet again to listen to brief research presentations from physiology graduate students (two students per week). These biweekly meetings are repeated on a weekly basis during the eight weeks, providing students with a forum for discussing their work and presenting their progress. Dr. Romani will attend these presentations, along with several physiology graduate students, to assist in facilitating discussion.

During the last week of the SURP program, the students gather with the faculty and their research mentors to present their SURP project to the department. A faculty committee selects the top two students for reception of the SURP Research Recognition Awards.

SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN PHARMACOLOGY

For over 20 years, the Department of Pharmacology has sponsored the Summer Undergraduate Research Program for three to eight students per year. Generous funding has been provided by the American Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics and from the HHMI-sponsored Summer Program in Undergraduate Research (SPUR), which is coordinated by the Department of Biology.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program provides "hands on" research experience for sophomores and juniors in the area of molecular pharmacology. Although the projects will vary, each is related to a common theme - elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction of chemical agents such as drugs, hormones and neurotransmitters with biological systems. For more information about Pharmacology, click here.

Students spend at least ten weeks during the summer working on a research project in a lab selected according to their interests. In addition to research, weekly seminars are presented to acquaint the students with the broad range of research projects in the Pharmacology Department.
