On Sunday July 10, 2011, the White Coat Ceremony was held at Severance Hall to welcome the entering class of 2011 and adorn them with the symbol of the white coat. The ceremony was highlighted by an inspirational speech to the incoming students by Dr. Edgar Jackson, a School of Medicine alumus and a recently retired internist from University Hospitals. Dr. Jackson was Chief of Staff Emeritus and Senior Advisor to the CEO of UH and the Presidents of UH and University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Jackson also champion's diversity efforts at University Hospitals and has served as clinical professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University since 1986.
This is an extraordinary class. Their academic credentials are impeccable, but more important, our Admissions Committee and Dean of Admissions, Dr. Lina Mehta, have assembled an accomplished group with talents in music and dance, international experiences, many volunteer experiences, and some with expertise in politics, entrepreneurship, education, sports, and research.
Five arrived with a PhD degree, 16 with Master's degrees, and two with a law degree. We have scholars who have completed research through the National Institutes of Health, the Fulbright research award, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Collectively, they have published 56 research papers and given more than 70 presentations at national meetings. Nearly all have been volunteers or served as tutors; many traveled to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. We counted a total of 567 volunteer activities from their applications! Others have served on the home front acting as care provider to members of their own families.
The range of talents and experiences they represent may help them in unexpected ways as they go on to solve complex problems in patients from every walk of life. Among their more unique class talents, we have a competitive Rubik's cube solver, an elephant conservationist, a professional fly-fishing guide and a calligraphy enthusiast. They bring perspectives from a diverse array of employment experiences, from working behind the counter at Dunkin Donuts to designing iPhone and iPad software at Apple and engineering aircraft systems for Rolls Royce.
There are numerous musicians, singers, artists, poets, film-makers, dancers, and actors. And, they bring to us physical prowess and stamina - among the class you will find marathoners and athletes in soccer, hockey, track, football, water polo and golf.
They come to us from 85 different Universities and Colleges, and they hail from the 29 states and 4 foreign countries. There were 196 students admitted, of which 32 are going to the CCLCM, 13 to the MST program, and 151 to the University track.
Students at the School of Medicine, on average, perform consistently higher on the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) when compared to the national average consisting of all US and Canadian medical schools.
USMLE Results 2007-2010
Since the implementation of the WR2 curriculum, students in the Classes of 2010, 2011, and 2012 scored, on average, more than 10 points above the national average on USMLE Step 1.
In recent years, the gap between our students' Step 1 scores and the national average has been widening.

The USMLE Step 2 CK and CS exams are typically taken in the months following the completion of the third year.
Residency Match Results: Historically, CWRU students do extremely well in the Match. The national board no longer offically tracks 1st choice matches versus other choices. However, our students have consistently been thrilled with their Match results and train in outstanding residency programs locally and across the country.
