Since the number of qualified applicants from the United States alone far exceeds the number of places available, international applicants generally are not encouraged to seek admission to U.S. medical schools. Of the 17,759 students enrolled in first-year classes in U.S. medical schools in 2007 only 164 were non U.S. citizens and most of these students had permanent resident status. Historically, 1-3 international students matriculate at the School of Medicine annually. Note should be paid to the limitations on resources available for financial aid to students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Most medical schools, including the School of Medicine, require proof of payment up front for 2 years. International students often take out loans to cover costs, and these must be cosigned by a US citizen. This does not always pertain to Canadian students. The requirements for acceptance to medical school are listed in the Medical School Admissions Requirements (MSAR) handbook, which you can get from the American Association of Medical Colleges. Yes, we receive a large number of applications from our neighbors to the north. Does the School of Medicine accept international students other than Canada? What if I received my undergraduate degree from a university outside the US or Canada? While we will accept your foreign undergraduate coursework, you should be prepared to complete at least one year of challenging science coursework in an accredited US or Canadian, four-year college or university prior to application. What if I received a Masters or PhD degree in the US?

Case Western Reserve University has an office of International Student Services which can help coordinate much of the documentation necessary to enroll in our School. What if I have a change in my status while in the application process? It is your responsibility to notify the Admissions Office immediately if you have a change in your status. Are international students eligible for merit scholarships? Yes. The Admissions Committee decides which accepted applicants will be invited to apply for a merit-based scholarship. Are international students eligible for needs-based or federal aid? No. The Office of Financial Aid awards funds that are restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the United States.
