SECOND LOOK WEEKEND

The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Office of Admissions receives approximately 5,500 applications each year from applicants from all across the country. From this pool, approximately 360 applicants, all with exceptional academic records and extraordinary personal accomplishments are accepted for admission. The "Second Look Weekend" was developed three years ago as a tool for the recruitment of top students who have not yet decided among multiple offers of admission. These top applicants consider not only the academic credentials of the school, but also weigh lifestyle factors such as compatibility with fellow students and faculty, housing, and  attributes of the city in their decision making process.  The Second Look Weekend allows potential matriculants additional time to meet with current students, faculty, alumni, and potential classmates in a more relaxed and informal setting than the interview day.  In addition to campus and city tours, the applicants enjoy an evening dinner with alumni, learn about a multitude of student organizations, receive further curricular information and have the opportunity to sample Cleveland nightlife with current students.  In the past, Second Look Weekend also coincided with the student musical production of "Doc Opera".  Of the 130 students who attended Second Look Weekend in 2007, over 60% ultimately decided to matriculate at our School. Second Look Weekend is viewed by top schools as an increasingly important recruiting tool in ensuring strength and diversity of the student body.

SECOND LOOK WEEKEND 2007

Interim Dean Pam Davis and the Office of Admissions invited all of our accepted students to attend a Second Look Weekend on March 23-25. This year, 130 accepted applicants returned to learn more about the School, meet future classmates, and explore Cleveland without the stress of interviews.

The weekend began on Friday with a welcome reception hosted by Dean Davis. The accepted applicants had a chance to mingle among other future classmates, current Case students, and browse around numerous student organization tables in the lobby of the InterContinental Hotel at the Cleveland Clinic. Later in the evening, the attendees were treated to performances by Artists in Medicine. Artists in Medicine is a student organization that showcases our students' talents in the fine arts ranging from sculptures to singing. This year's performances included the a string quartet, stand-up comedy, DJ'ing, an alternative rock band, a blues band, "unplugged" acoustic songs, acapella singing, and a creative (and hilarious) interpretive dance of Celiac Disease.

Breakfast with Faculty Small Group Demonstration

After a hearty breakfast Saturday morning with faculty members, the future Class of 2011 were presented a series of informational sessions about housing, the student advising system, a guest lecture by the Medical Director of the Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland, a demonstration of the ecurriculum and computing requirements. The students then had lunch while they observed a demonstration of a Case Inquiry Group to learn how problem-based learning is incorporated into the WR2 curriculum. The sessions concluded with a student panel consisting of current students representing all four years.

Adult Simulator Simulated Waveforms

The attendees were given bus tours around the surrounding neighborhoods and included a stop at the the Mt. Sinai Skills and Simulation Center. They learned how Case students utilize the facility and the functions of different simulators. For dinner, the students were divided into groups and transported to local alumni homes. Our special guests loved this opportunity to meet and talk with local physicians and faculty members in a more intimate setting. From there, the students were transported downtown to one of Cleveland's newest bars, The Corner Alley, to hang out and bowl with more current Case students.

The Second Look Weekend events ended on Sunday morning with some final comments from Dr. Lina Mehta, Associate Dean for Admissions, and Christian Essman, Director of Admissions. Many students spent the rest of the day looking at housing and exploring other parts of Cleveland and the university area. We had a wonderful time hosting everyone that weekend and felt that it was a tremendous success.

But don’t take our word for it, read the comments we received from some of our guests:

  • “Very well organized. Informative yet fun. I had a blast!"
  • “The current students were extremely helpful, outgoing and informative. Other than the administration, the current students were the most impressive part of the weekend. I hope that I am as impressive and helpful this time next year for the class of 2012.”
  • "I would really like to say that you all did an amazing job in picking students that were both bright and kind, and I am looking forward to being a member of this class."
  • "Thank you for the wonderful weekend! It really sealed my decision to come to Case and settled my uneasiness about life in Cleveland. I would also like to say thank you for hosting an LGBT reception. Having a chance to meet with incoming students, current students and members of the Cleveland community was really wonderful. I look forward to seeing you in July!"
  • "You all did a great job planning the weekend. EVERYONE I spoke to at the weekend and after said they had an amazing time, and that it was the best 2nd look weekend of any other school. Although I was already sure of my decision to attend Case, the Second Look Weekend was an excellent opportunity to meet other students and become more familiar of all of the great things Case SOM has to offer."
  • "I thought that small group presentation was great! It was important to get to see the groups in action. and everyone was so nice!"
  • "I've liked Case since day 1, but I wanted to make sure that I could see myself fitting in with the students and faculty. After meeting all the amazing people at second look weekend, I can't see myself anywhere other than Case."
  • “I can only begin to tell you how impressive it was that the Case faculty was at EVERY event.”
  • "I had a wonderful time!"
  • “Breakfast with faculty was an awesome idea - lots of time to really be able to see what their lives are like.”
  • “I thought it was very nice of the admissions faculty to spend their whole weekend with us. It definitely impressed me.
  • “Thanks for a great time!”
  • “The weekend was terrific!! I was impressed at how smoothly everything went.”
  • “One of the main reasons why I chose Case was because of the people I met on the Second Look Weekend. I met my roommates for next year, amazing faculty, and friends I will remain in contact with regardless of where they decide to attend school.”
  • “It may have made my decision for me.”
  • “A great combination of information and fun.”
  • “I was already pretty sure I wanted to come to Case, but this helped confirm my decision.”
  • “Although I still don't know where I will choose to attend medical school, I am considering Case much more after your Second Look Weekend.”
  • “I think that staying at the hotel was one of the best ways to allow the prospective students to get to know each other. While I probably should not have stayed up as late as I did, being in the hotel and having access to the hospitality suites fostered conversation outside of the scheduled activities and really helped cement friendships.”
  • “The weekend was awesome, it's as simple as that.”
  • “The faculty, students, staff- I mean everyone was just SO SO SO AMAZING AND WARM AND WELCOMING. I really cannot emphasize that enough.”
  • “Dinner at the Dean's house was the highlight of my weekend. I was able to meet, and get to know on a personal level, some of my very interesting future classmates whom I probably would have gone through the whole weekend without meeting....and the food was excellent.”
