Our medical students participate in nearly forty student organizations. We support the creativity and energy of our students, whose initiative and leadership have led to the creation of these groups.
The student organizations at the School of Medicine are much more than a conduit for exploring medical interests with peers; they provide valuable opportunities to develop leadership skills
and extraordinary opportunities to work with faculty, national medical practitioners, and researchers.
CWRU medical students are involved in a variety of activities ranging from interviewing prospective students to volunteering at the Cleveland
Free Clinic .
In fact, our some of our student groups have received national awards recognizing their dedication and contributions to the School and the community. In 2003, AMSA
selected the School of Medicine as the recipient of the Paul R. Wright Award in Medical Education
for the School’s exceptional focus on activism in medicine and the integration of advocacy skills training into the medical education curriculum. In 2006, the School of Medicine chapter
of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) received the Chapter of the Year Award for their accomplishments and service to under-served

- American Medical Association- Medical Student Section
Mission Statement: The AMA-MSS chapter at Case serves to inform medical students about the events affecting medicine in general and allows students to get involved locally, regionally and nationally in the other aspects of healthcare - policy and politics - with the backing of the most powerful medical association in the nation, the AMA. - American Medical Student Association (AMSA)
Mission Statement: The American Medical Student Association is committed to improving health care and healthcare delivery to all people; promoting active improvement in medical education; involving its members in the social, moral, and ethical obligations of the profession of medicine; assisting in the improvement and understanding of world health problems; contributing to the welfare of medical students, interns, residents and post-MD/DO trainees; and advancing the profession of medicine.
- American Medical Women’s Association
Mission Statement: Despite the extraordinary progress women have made in medicine and the sciences over the last 150 years, there continues to be a pressing need for female role models and mentors, specialized professional development programs, and increased study of women’s health issues. The American Medical Women's Association is an organization with both physician and student membership that functions at the local, national, and international level to advance women in medicine and improve women's health. We achieve this by providing and developing leadership, advocacy, education, expertise, mentoring, and strategic alliances. AMWA aims to provide women with a forum to learn from each other about women's health and how to handle multiple roles, a balanced career, and family. Our projects include mentoring with 3rd and 4th year medical students, local physicians, faculty, and alumni; educating our peers about women’s health issues; panels on the unique challenges facing female physicians; and networking with other organizations that address women’s health concerns, such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
- Anesthesiology Interest Group
Mission Statement: To promote awareness and stimulate interest in the field of anesthesiology. To educate medical students by offering lectures, panel discussions, and interactions with faculty and residents in formal and informal setting. To expose students to clinical and academic anesthesiology by facilitating shadowing and research. To create competitive candidates for anesthesiology residency programs and to prepare students beginning a career in anesthesiology.
- Asian Pacific American Medical Association (APAMSA)
Mission Statement: Our mission is (1) to bring together Asians and others interested in the health issues that affect Asians in order to develop a strong, collective, public and political voice; (2) to directly promote the health and well-being of the Asian community as well as help all health care workers who work with these communities understand how to care for the Asian patient in a culturally sensitive manner; (3) APAMSA provides an important forum for APA medical students to meet, exchange information and experiences and develop personally and professionally. Our events have included a a bone marrow drive, HepB screenings, dim sum with docs, National conference, mental health in Asian community, and more! Most importantly, APAMSA is open to everyone, and it is free to join.
- Business in Health
Mission Statement: The Business in Health Interest Group is dedicated to educating and empowering the future physicians of American so that they may be well versed in 1. the politics of healthcare finance, 2. the role of the physician as an individual in a fair market, and 3. comprehension of the financial forces that will shape the future of healthcare. Activities will focus on learning through interactive case studies and exploration of accepted economic theories.
- Case for Life
Mission Statement: The mission of the Case for Life group of Case SOM is to provide information necessary to understanding the complexities of life issues in medicine, raise awareness to pro-life perspectives, foster dialogue and personal reflections to reach informed decisions, and to encourage physician leadership in exploring and advocating for life issues. The group is dedicated to reducing the number of abortions performed in the medical profession.
- CASE-IMANA
Mission Statement: Established in 1967, the Islamic Medical Association of North America or IMANA (www.imana.org) is a medical organization dedicated to medical relief work and studying the Islamic influence on modern medicine. IMANA's mission is to provide a forum and resource for Muslim physicians and other health care professionals, to promote a greater awareness of Islamic medical ethics and values among Muslims and the community-at-large, to provide humanitarian and medical relief, and to be an advocate in health care policy. Case-IMANA, the local chapter run by the University program and Lerner College medical students, is a community service oriented organization with a focus on interfaith bridge-building. Case-IMANA also aims to serve as a social network for University program & Lerner College medical students, as well as physicians at University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic.
- Case Medical Journal Club
Mission Statement: The Case Med Journal Club’s purpose an opportunity for all medical students to gain a rich understanding of advances in medicine, explore the interactions of biotechnology and clinical practice, hone their skills in critical analysis and presentation and be engaged in scientific discussions that may spark a personal research interest. It is our assertion that the staggering pace of advances in medical science requires us to develop an acute awareness of scientific research if we are to be great teachers, humanitarians, and clinicians. Thus, the ultimate goal of the Case Med Journal Club is to be a catalyst in the development of a great physician.
- The Case Medical Musicians
Mission Statement: “The Case Med Musicians” is an umbrella organization of musicians (students and/or faculty) within the School of Medicine. From our membership we create subgroups of volunteer medical musicians which perform outreaches in the Cleveland community. Our main goals are to enhance patient wellness through music and to simply have fun! The Case Med String Quartet, founded in 2004, is one such subgroup. Solos, duets, trios and any other combinations and permutations are freely welcomed and encouraged. If you are interested in joining the excitement, please email one of the student contacts below with your name, instrument(s), and a brief description of your playing/performing experience (i.e. number of years of formal study, preferred musical genre, etc.)
- Christian Medical and Dental Association
Mission Statement: CMDA is a student-led Christian fellowship for medical and dental students that aims to foster relationships and spiritual growth. Our activities include community lunches, bible studies, potlucks, fellowship events, special speakers, and mentoring opportunities with local physicians.
- Community Health Initiative (CHI)
Mission Statement: The mission of the Community Health Initiative is threefold: 1. we will use our resources to provide healthcare access to the underserved, 2. we will both teach and be taught by the community we serve, 3. we will carry out this mission while embracing humanistic values that will help to guide us throughout the rest of our careers.
- Dermatology Interest Group
Mission Statement: The Dermatology Interest Group exists to give information to students considering dermatology as a specialty. In the past, the group has hosted several events, such as a resident panel and a clinical workshop in dermatology. Through our organization, students will have an opportunity to get more exposure and experience in dermatology during their pre-clinical years.
- DOC OPERA
Mission Statement: Doc Opera is a variety show made up of videotaped skits, musical performances, and parodied songs/dances targeting the medical school, medical community, life in Cleveland, and everything else that goes along with being a Case medical student. It is newly written, directed, and performed by medical students (and faculty) each year, and the proceeds are donated to a designated non-profit health oriented organization. This year the show will be on December 1st, 2008 and proceeds will go towards The Free Clinic of Cleveland.
- Emergency Medicine Interest Group
Mission Statement: The goal of the Emergency Medicine Interest Group is to introduce students to skills related to handling critically medical and trauma patients, disaster management, as well as promote awareness of issues that impact access to emergency care.
- Family Medicine Interest Group
Mission Statement: To develop the interest and knowledge in all students who have the “heart of a family doctor” to become active in leadership, education, and promotion of the ideals that are core Family Medicine values.
- Internal Medicine Interest Group
Mission Statement:To provide opportunities to interact with and experience the fields of Internal Medicine.
- International Health Interest Group
Mission Statement: The Internal Health Interest Group is committed to educating students about career opportunities in International Health. IHIB also seeks to create opportunities for medical students to get involved with international health and works to activelyt engage faculty in order to facilitate this process. We hope to both create new interest in the field of international health among medical students, as well as identify forums of exploration for those students that already have an interest in this growing area of medical practice.
- Intersociety Council
Mission Statement: The Intersociety Council is the governing body of the four academic societies: Wearn, Robbins, Satcher and Blackwell. The goal of the Intersociety Council is to facilitate interactions between students of all four classes at the Case School of Medicine and to aid in the personal and professional development of every student through volunteer efforts, social events, learning experiences, and peer to peer mentoring programs.
- Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA)
Mission Statement: The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) is a network of students, alumni, and health professionals who are interested in the health and well-being of the Latino community, dedicated to providing social and professional support for Latino students, and committed to increasing cultural awareness within our medical school community. Anyone is welcome to participate, and we have several activities planned for the upcoming year. Clinically, we are working to establish a medical spanish program, a shadowing program with Spanish-speaking clinics, and an event on health disparities in the Latino community. Socially, we will be co-hosting a Minority Student retreat with SNMA, organizing a Cinco-de-Mayo celebration, participating in the Puerto Rican Day Parade, and organizing nights out in Cleveland such as dinner and salsa dancing.
- Medical Students for Choice
Mission Statement: Our MSFC chapter is committed to providing medical students with accurate information about reproductive health and all-options counseling. We are dedicated to curricular reform, working closely with faculty to improve our education surrounding the medical, legal and ethical aspects related to reproductive health.
- OB/GYN Interest Group
Mission Statement: The objectives of the OB/GYN Interest Group are 1. to help students understand the dynamics of a career in OB/GYN 2. to promote clinical skills relevant to woman’s health 3. to match students with OB/GYN mentors based on their interests, and 4. to understand the residency application process for OB/GYN.
- Otolaryngology (ENT) Interest Group
Mission Statement: Our goal is to help students, especially those in their preclinical years, to explore the field of Otolaryngology. This means providing opportunities to learn about the field generally, about the vast spectrum of specialization within the field, and about the research taking place at affiliated institutions. Our group also seeks to inform students about the process of applying to otolaryngology residencies as well as to learn about what it really takes to become an otolaryngologist.
- Pathology Interest Group
Mission Statement: The Pathology Student Interest Group aims to enhance the visibility of pathology as a career for medical students through lectures, shadowing experiences, research opportunities, and networking with faculty, resident, and community pathologists.
- Pediatrics Interest Group
Mission Statement: Our goal is to provide students with opportunities for education, mentorship, and community service in the field of pediatric medicine. We accomplish this through a variety of projects and events that allow students to interact with both patients and physicians in the Cleveland area. Come gain exposure to pediatrics by attending talks from pediatricians whose specialties reflect relevant topics in the curriculum. Take advantage of our database that lists willing and helpful general pediatricians and specialists to schedule valuable shadowing encounters. Experience the personal side of disorders affecting children through sessions where kids and families share their stories with medical students. Whether you're on rounds with a pediatric cardiologist, interacting with children diagnosed with cancer, or teaching kids proper hygiene at Teddy Bear Day at the Zoo, you will find the Peds Interest Group rewarding in many ways.
- People of Every Orientation Protecting Liberty and Equality (PEOPLE) in Medicine
Mission Statement: PEOPLE in Medicine is dedicated to educating our fellow medical students and the community about LGBTQ health care issues. We provide support to students of all sexual orientations and their allies in the health professions and advocate for curricular reform to improve the quality of patient care. Past events include a talk on LGBT patient rights, a sexuality workshop for medical students, and social events. Health policy and curriculum projects are currently underway. ALL STUDENTS ARE WELCOME!
- Phi Delta Epsilon (PDE)
Mission Statement: Phi Delta Epsilon is an international medical fraternity that, through planned activities during the academic year, allows students to develop leadership and professional skills which often complement their basic understanding of medical science. When the time comes to apply for medical school and to match for residency, active membership in PhiDE is evidence that a student is well rounded and motivated as well as serving as an often essential conversation-starter with other PhiDE members in important positions within the hospital. The Upsilon chapter here at Case is currently revitalizing itself and this provides an excellent opportunity to takeover leadership positions

- Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) Interest Group
Mission Statement: The CaseMed PRS Interest Group will aim to “reconstruct” the real face of the fascinating field of plastic surgery for students who are considering this specialty as their future career path. As a primary objective, the group will help interested students to establish contact with prominent faculty members in the field, as well as residents and upper-classmen who are in the midst of residency application process. The group plans to host several events throughout each academic year, including but not limited to faculty/resident discussion panels, guest speeches, and “low-key” mixers.
- Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN)
Mission Statement: To provide students interested in neurology, neurosurgery and related fields with opportunity to learn more about these professions and gain experience in those areas by meeting faculty, volunteering, hearing talks on recent research, etc.
- Student National Medical Association
Mission Statement: Student National Medical Association is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. Established in 1964 by medical students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, the membership includes over 5000 medical students, pre-medical students, residents and physicians. SNMA is committed to increasing the pipeline of students of color that consider and prepare for medical and scientific careers as well as ensuring that those entering medical school complete all requirements successfully. Within medical school, we provide academic preparation and recruitment and retention programming in order to assure the pipeline to medicine is supported. SNMA is also committed to addressing and reducing morbidity and mortality of underserved populations. The CWRU SNMA chapter continually strives to follow the mission statement. In addition to yearly programming addressing the needs of the community and issues related to minority health, we also have longitudinal outreach programs in local schools and community centers. We also work with the admissions office in the recruitment of minority applicants and provide academic support to current SNMA members by providing resources and organized academic sessions.
- Tar Wars
Mission Statement: Tar Wars is a national anti-tobacco program sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) that targets 4th and 5th grade students. The program is designed “to educate students about being tobacco-free, provide them with the tools to make positive decisions regarding their health, and promote personal responsibility for their well-being”. - Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM)
Mission Statement: Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) aims to increase research and development funding for research on neglected diseases and change Case's patent and licensing regulations to ensure discoveries made on campus are more accessible to the less-developed world. This Case chapter is part over thirty chapters around the country. The national organization <http://www.uaem.org> is very active and we hope to do our part at Case to make sure all universities protect discoveries for those most in need.
