Daniel B. Ornt, M.D., F.A.C.P. is a native of Rochester, New York born in 1951. He received his undergraduate degree from Colgate University in 1973 and his medical degree from the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester in 1976. As a student he was awarded a summer research experience in Yugoslavia which resulted in contribution to a Fogarty International Center Proceeding. He trained in internal medicine at the University of Vermont and was further trained in nephrology at the University of Michigan where he was a Research Fellow of the National Kidney Foundation, Inc. in 1980. He is a Diplomat in the American Board of Internal Medicine with further certification from that Board in nephrology. Dr. Ornt joined the faculty at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester in 1981. During his 22 years on the faculty he rose from Senior Instructor to Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in 1998. In 2002, he became the first tenured Professor at the University of Rochester in the newly created track for clinicians, teachers and scholars.
Dr. Ornt has held numerous administrative positions at the University of Rochester including Director of Chronic Dialysis at Strong Memorial Hospital and Vice Chairman of Medicine at the School of Medicine. He was elected to the University of Rochester Medical Center Board in 2001. His clinical expertise has been recognized by election to Best Doctors in America, Inc. for several years. In research, he has authored numerous publications and presented at many national and international meetings. Dr. Ornt has served on review committees for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), served as Associate Program Director for the NIH-funded Clinical Research Center at Rochester and served as principle investigator at Rochester for the NIH, multi-center trial in hemodialysis; the results of which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. He recently moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he is Professor of Medicine and serves as the Vice Dean for Education and Academic Affairs for the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. In the community he is a recognized volunteer, acting as President for the National Kidney Foundation of Upstate New York from which he received their highest honor, the Gift of Life Award. The national organization went on to recognize him with the Distinguished Service Award in 1998. In 2007, Dr. Ornt is recognized as one of Cleveland’s “Top Doctors” by Cleveland Magazine. He is a member of numerous societies including a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
