IT Notes Before End of Year 2

    Dear Second Year Students,

A few IT notes for you before you end second year, especially if you are leaving campus for an extended time.

    1. PLEASE backup your laptops!

    2. Everyone must change their Case Network ID password once per year. Visit this website to see when you will have to change again. You might want to change it before you go, in case you have problems and need to stop by E-318 to get it fixed. https://its-services.case.edu/my-case-identity/password/check/

    3. If you do change your Case password, it does not change the password on your Dell or Apple laptop. You might want to change those at the same time, just for security sake.

    4. If your laptop gets thirsty and you accidently give it a beverage to drink. PLEASE shut it down immediately. DO NOT try to restart it, as you'll probably just fry circuits. Dell students, the parts will be replaced. Apple students, you just voided your warranty and any parts needing replaced will be at your expense. If you bring the laptop to us as soon as possible, including shipping it to us (include a pre-paid return sticker and we'll ship it back) and we will see about repairing it. Call us at 216-368-4669. Do not attempt to dry it yourself. A couple of days is not enough. Let us dry it for you. We can take the laptop apart and properly dry the electronic circuits to minimize the damage.

    5. If your hard drive starts making a clicking sound, please get it to us as soon as possible. It might mean the hard drive is getting ready to crash. Oh and don't forget about backing up!

    6. If you have a smartphone and it stops syncing e-mail, the problem could be the result of changing your Case Network ID password. You can also check your Google Apps password at the link above.

    7. If your laptop is running hot, it might be due to dust inside. Stop by E-318 and we'll check it out and clean it.

    8. For those of you going on to do your research work, please do not put PHI on your laptops. Your laptops are not secure storage devices.

    9. PLEASE backup your laptops! Can you hear me pleading, begging?

Thanks and have a very productive study time.
