Applicants for training must be students in or graduates of an accredited medical school. The department requires a one year pre-requisite of a surgical internship, preferably completed at the Case School of Medicine Department of Surgery. The year at Case includes training in Neurology and Critical Care. If not done at CWRU, this preliminary year must be completed in an ACGME approved program. Ideally, this year should emphasize pre- and post-operative care, management of critically ill patients and basic surgical techniques. As recommended by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, six months of surgical disciplines other than neurosurgery must be included. Due to recent changes to the ABNS bylaws, the remaining six months will include three months of Neurology and up to three months on the Neurosurgery service.
Applications may be made directly to the Neurological Surgery Matching Program (NSMP) in San Francisco by accessing their website: www.SFMATCH.org. The deadline for applications is October 1st. Applications are processed continually with invitations for interviews being sent out in October and November. We are aware that your Dean’s letter will follow in November. Final selections for the match list are made in January for applicants to begin PGY-I the following July.
Regulations regarding matching procedures for PGY-I surgical internship have recently changed. It is necessary for all candidates applying for a neurosurgical residency position to register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The Graduate Medical Education office here at University Hospitals of Cleveland will rank you appropriately if you match with our neurosurgery residency program. When you register with the NRMP, search under Neurosurgery – Preliminary program at Case/University Hospitals.

Case School of Medicine students
All Case medical students complete a core clerkship in Neuroscience during their third year of medical school. Our clerkship is directed by Dr. Alan Cohen of the Department of Neurological Surgery and Drs. Krishan Chandar and Colleen Tomcik of the Department of Neurology. The clerkship allows students direct hands-on experience caring for patients with a wide variety of neurological disorders. Students participate actively on the clinical service under the supervision of Neurosurgery and Neurology residents and attendings.
Each student spends one week on the clinical Neurosurgery service, either at University Hospitals of Cleveland or MetroHealth Medical Center. The three remaining weeks are spent on the Neurology service.
During the week on the Neurosurgery service, students have the opportunity to observe physicians in clinic and in the operating room, and to participate in patient management in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Students work with the residents on the pediatric and adult inpatient service, and closely follow two or more patients during the week. Students write daily progress notes, assist in the perioperative management of these patients, write an admission history and physical exam, if applicable, and follow up on any diagnostic testing. Students select patients to follow in collaboration with the chief resident and/or the neurosurgery faculty.
Didactic sessions for the Neuroscience clerkship are held on Thursday afternoons. A wide range of neurologic and neurosurgical topics are covered by faculty members from both departments. The lectures cover the gamut of neurological and neurosurgical disease processes and treatments. Neurosurgery lectures include such topics as cerebrovascular disease, brain tumors, hydrocephalus, spinal disorders, head trauma and doctor-patient communication.
Visiting Students/Externships
Opportunities for a four week internship are available for fourth year medical students interested in a visiting rotation. Dr. David Hart is the Director of the Extern Program. If you would like to discuss the program, he can be reached by e-mail at david.hart@UHhospitals.org or by telephone at (216) 844-3008.
Students are assigned to an individual attending neurosurgeon per request or are given an appropriate assignment based on their specialty interest. Students participate actively as members of the neurosurgical team and come away from the rotation with an in-depth experience in neurosurgery. Students observe cases in the operating room and are responsible for the post-operative care of patients under the supervision of the attending neurosurgeon and chief resident. Students also attend clinics with faculty members each week. Students are given the opportunity to make a brief presentation at one of the weekly neurosurgery clinical conferences.
For information regarding the registration process through the Case School of Medicine, please click on casemed.case.edu/registrar or contact Theresa Hancock in the Registrar’s office. She can be reached by telephone at (216) 368-6137 or e-mail at theresa.hancock@case.edu.
