Dr. Richard D. Aach, Associate Dean & Director

Prior to his appointment as Director in 1998, Dr. Aach was the Chairman of the department of Medicine at the medical school’s affiliate institution, Mt. Sinai Medical Center and served as it representative to the university as an Associate Dean.

A Professor of Medicine at the school since moving to Cleveland in 1989, Dr. Aach is a graduate of Washington University School of Medicine. He received his residency training in Internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and spent two years as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer at the Center of Disease Control in Atlanta. He received his specialty training in liver disease as a Fellow at Yale University in New Haven. Returning to St. Louis as the Chief Resident in Medicine at Barnes Hospital, he then joined the staff of Washington University School of Medicine, where he worked from 1964-1980. Appointed a Professor of medicine in 1975, he was the medical center’s Hepatologist and the Associate Director of the Division of Gastroenterology. He also was the program director of the Medicine residency program and served on the Executive Faculty Council. From 1980-1989, he held the appointments of Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1989, he was recruited to be the Medical Director of Mt. Sinai Medical Center and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Medicine of the medical school. He is the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award and the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award from Washington University School of Medicine, and the faculty Teaching Excellence Award at Mt. Sinai. He served on the board of Trustees of the Mt. Sinai Foundation.

Dr. Aach’s research has largely been directed toward the study of viral hepatitis. He also has been active in a number of national organizations, and served on the Executive Board and as Treasurer of the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine.

At CWRU, Aach has been an associate dean since 1996 and a professor of medicine since 1989. He will retain both titles. He became a CWRU faculty member in 1989 when he joined the CWRU-affiliated hospital, Mt. Sinai Medical Center. At Mt. Sinai, he was medical director of the Department of Medicine, a member of the Medical Executive Committee, and held several other positions. He was also vice chairman of the academic Department of Medicine.

"Dr. Aach's extensive experience with both academic and community hospitals around the country will be a tremendous asset as he helps students identify residency programs for their future training," said Berger. "He is an excellent physician and teacher. Our students will find his advice and assistance invaluable," he said. In his new capacity, Aach advises medical students as they apply for medical residencies through the National Resident Matching Program and interview at hospitals throughout the nation for internships and residencies. He also counsels students about career opportunities in medicine and biomedical research.

Aach took over from the former director of residency and career planning, Mary Louise Miller, M.D., Ph.D., who stepped down last year to devote more time to her psychiatric practice at MetroHealth Medical Center.

A St. Louis native, Aach received his bachelor of arts and medical degrees from Washington University, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He did his internship and residency at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, followed by a fellowship in liver diseases at Yale University School of Medicine. He returned to Barnes as chief resident and joined Washington University medical school's faculty, where he worked from 1964 to 1980. He was appointed professor of medicine in 1975. He chaired the internal medicine house staff training program and was a member of the Executive Faculty Council. He was selected by the senior medical class for the Teacher of the Year Award. He was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 1989.

In 1980, he joined Sinai Hospital of Baltimore as physician-in-chief and head of the Department of Medicine, with a concurrent faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins University as professor of medicine in the School of Medicine.

Board certified in internal medicine, Aach has published extensively on liver diseases. He has contributed to 16 medical textbooks. He holds membership and has served as an officer in several professional organizations.

He has been married to Janet Silverman for 44 years. They make their home in Shaker Heights and have four grown children.
